The former Ukhozi FM Programs Manager explained how radio contracts work. Tembe was a content producer for the Vuka Mzansi breakfast show during Linda Mr Magic Sibiya's time at Ukhozi FM. Later, she became the station programs manager. Speaking to Ntokozo Tshapa and Ntokozo Khuluse on Podcast, Radio and Staff, she said, "Radio contracts are called freelance contracts or independent contracts."
"In order to get that contract, there are a lot of things that need to be considered. Either the station approached you, or you got a job by applying for the job; and once agreed on the deal, then they will look at your experience and your level of performance to determine your salary. On the issue of gaining an audience, you have to prove that the audience you have, you had a lot of influence in getting them.
"I have experienced a lot of issues coming from the clients, as some may bully even presenters. So, it is true that clients may influence the station in deciding the future of the presenter in that station. During my time at Ukhozi FM, without mentioning names, out of five high earners, two of them were females. What I have learned is that most of the broadcasters in KZN don't know how to negotiate contracts.
"My advice is, before you sign a contract, you will need to read and consult if you don't understand it. The contract states do's and don'ts."
