Prior to the CAF Champions League match between Orlando Pirates and Saint Eloi Lupopo at Orlando Stadium, a lot happened. Coming into the game, it was alleged that Lupopo officials mistreated the Orlando Pirates team in Lubumbashi in the first leg last week. Upon the arrival of the visitors' bus, it was escorted by the police into the stadium. When they arrived, it is alleged that Saint Eloi Lupopo did not want to comply with what the security at the stadium was saying.

The visitors wanted to force their entry into the changing room; it ended up in a clash. Later, the visitors entered the changing room. One of the officials from the visiting team, who was left outside, clashed with the security and ended up being thrown outside the gate. Orlando Pirates started the game, pressing high, and did not allow the visitors to play. They dominated the first half. In the 39th minute, Masindi Nemtajela opened the scoring for the home team.

In the second half, Orlando Pirates continued to put the visitors under pressure; it resulted in a goal in the 80th minute by Yanela Mbuthuma. In the 94th minute, Kabelo Dlamini made a brilliant pass to Oswin Appollis, who beat the keeper to find the equalizer. The match went to penalties; Deon Hotto and Yanela Mbuthuma missed penalties for Orlando Pirates. The visitors won 5-4 on penalties to qualify for the group stages. Referee Moussa issued two red cards: Sambu Maniania (Saint Eloi Lupopo) and Tshepang Moremi (Orlando Pirates).
