Mamelodi Sundowns winning Morupule Charity Spectacular
After struggling to win a cup this season in South Africa, Betway Premiership reigning champions have won the Morupule Charity Spectacular tournament in Botswana. Since the arrival of Miguel Cardoso, they have won only the Betway Premiership title. Last season, they lost in the final of the CAF Champions League against Egyptian side Pyramids FC. This season in the Betway Premiership, they lost in the MTN 8 semi-final against Orlando Pirates and against Marumo Gallants on penalties in the Carling Black Label Knockout Cup.
Morupule Charity Spectacular was played at Obed Itani Chilume in Botswana on Friday. In the first match, Mamelodi Sundowns beat Sua Flamingoes 3-0. After being left out of the Bafana Bafana squad for Afcon, Thapelo Morena scored the opening goal. Lebo Mothiba, with a great header, scored, and Miguel Reisinho scored the third goal on penalty. In the second match, Morupule Wanderers beat Tafic FC 1-0 to go to the final. Sua Flamingoes won 3-1 against Tafic FC in the third and fourth place.
In the final, Mamelodi Sundowns humiliated Morupule Wanderers 6-0 to become the champions. Iqraam Rayners scored four goals and Tashreeq Matthews scored a brace to finish the business of the day. Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Mr. Steve Komphela said they were participating in the tournament to serve the people of Botswana and support the good cause.
