Stellenbosch are through to the next round in the Carling Knockout Cup after beating Kaizer Chiefs 5-4 on penalties. Amakhosi fans came in numbers at DHL Stadium on Sunday afternoon. In the absence of coach Nasreddine Nabi, Amakhosi have won only one match so far, against Angolan side Kabuscorp in the CAF Confederations Cup.
After extra time, the match ended 0-0. Amakhosi did not take advantage after Stellenbosch FC star Thapelo Mokobodi got the red card in the 16th minute in the second half of extra time. On penalties, Gaston Sirino, Thabo Cele, Aden McCarthy, and Bradley Cross scored their penalties. Tashreeq Morris failed to score a penalty that would have been a winning goal for Kaizer Chiefs. Dillan Solomons missed a penalty that gave Stellies a win to the next round.
Man of the match Sibongiseni Mthethwa said, "I honestly don't know what to say, I'm so disappointed. We tried our best but luck was not on our side. Let me say, sorry to our fans, we will try again in the Nedbank Cup. I would ask them to be patient; it wasn't our plan not to win. I think our problem is in scoring goals, but I will say thanks for the support."
