Action SA party led by Herman Mashaba fired eight councillors for underperforming on their duties according to Herman Mashaba during their press briefing on Monday. Mashaba said "people have got a right to exercise that democratic right. We live in a democratic dispensation, we don't live under an evil system of apartheid; when you challenge it, you will disappear or be taken to Robben Island."

"As a party we give everyone an opportunity; fortunate enough, we did our homework. When we tried to be really fair as possible, when we announced the performance management for our councillors, last September already we got everyone equally from all three municipalities in Gauteng. To say let's sign the same performance agreements. It was not like one was judged better than the other."

"We said that in the event you failed, we are going to remove you. There are hardworking councillors, activists that deserve really to be here. Eight new councillors, the other ones have been removed and IEC has been informed. The others are most welcome to take us to court. We have the right to defend ourselves, we have all the evidence of consultation with them. If you are not prepared to work for society, but you expect society to pay your salaries, we are not an employment agency."
